Description
The POWERbreathe Shaker Medic Plus can help clear pulmonary secretions (mucus and phlegm) from the airways and lungs. Chronic breathing problems like COPD, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis and emphysema can cause a build-up of phlegm that can be irritable and make it feel harder to breathe. The Shaker Medic Plus is a drug-free solution that loosens and mobilises mucus from the lungs and improves breathing. Unlike other devices in the Shaker range, the Medic Plus is suitable for clinical settings.
A 2018 study found “the gravity-dependent devices were the ones to display close mechanical performances and produce optimal operational parameters at the simulated exhalation settings”.
How Does The Shaker Medic Plus Remove Mucus?
There is a weighted ball (two sizes included) inside the POWERbreathe Shaker Medic Plus that rises when breathing into the device and then falls under its own weight. This rise and fall action happens extremely quickly and feels like a vibration.
This vibration, combined with the gentle resistance created by breathing through the device, causes a number of positive benefits. Changes in air pressure encourage the smaller airways to open. Mucus is thinned or dislodged by the vibrations Optimised airflow helps move mucus to the large airways, where coughing can expel it.
What Are The Benefits of Using a Shaker Medic Plus?
The major benefit of the Shaker Medic Plus ‘multi-user’ version is that it can be reused when sterilised in an autoclave, between uses. Other benefits include:
Improve lung function: This drug-free device helps to open the airways, improving breathing efficiency. Mucus is loosened and mobilised. Once expelled, this reduces the risk of infection, fatigue and breathlessness.
Low Pressure Requirements: Each Shaker Medic Plus OPEP device requires a minimum pressure of 4cmH₂O or 8cmH₂O when exhaling. This is the lowest in the range of Shaker devices.
Economical: Prescription asthma inhalers and respiratory aids can be costly and need to be replaced. The Shaker Medic Plus can be used repeatedly, as an adjunct to conventional treatment.
