POWERbreathe Classic is the first breathing trainer we developed and is still as popular today as it was when it was first introduced. This manual device is designed to be simple and easy to use. With 9 manually adjustable levels over time you will be able to  strengthen your inspiratory breathing muscles. Helping you to increase your stamina and overall wellness.

Our scientifically proven training regime of 30 breaths, twice a day typically takes only a few minutes and, used properly, you should start to see the benefits within just a few weeks.

Inspiratory muscle training is proven by sports scientists and medical professionals to exercise and strengthen the muscles used to breathe in.

POWERbreathe is drug free, suitable for almost anyone and should cause no harmful side effects when used properly. Please read the following precautions and contraindications to ensure that POWERbreathe is used safely and appropriately.

Precautions:

  • The patient must not make changes to any prescribed medication or prescribed treatment programme without consulting their doctor.
  • POWERbreathe should not be used if the patient is suffering from a ruptured eardrum.
  • To prevent the potential transmission of infections, we recommend that POWERbreathe is not shared with other users, including family members.
  • This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
  • POWERbreathe is designed for exercising the inspiratory muscles only. No other use is intended or implied.
  • Anyone who is under the age of 16 should only use POWERbreathe with supervision from an adult. POWERbreathe contains small parts and is not suitable for children under 7 years.
  • Whilst training with POWERbreathe the patient should feel resistance when inhaling but it should not be painful. If the patient feels pain whilst using POWERbreathe they should stop immediately and consult their doctor.
  • Some users may experience slight ear discomfort when training with POWERbreathe, especially if they are recovering from a cold. This is caused by inadequate equalisation of pressure between the mouth and ears. If symptoms persist, patients should consult their doctor.
  • If a patient is suffering from a cold, sinusitis or respiratory tract infection, we advise that they do not use POWERbreathe until symptoms have disappeared.

Healthcare Professional should take into consideration the following conditions before patients use POWERbreathe:

  1. A history of spontaneous pneumothorax (a collapsed lung that was not due to traumatic injury e.g. broken rib), as it may lead to a recurrence of the condition.
  2. Pulmonary hypertension or large bullae on chest x-ray.
  3. Marked osteoporosis with history of rib fractures.
  4. Desaturation during or following IMT (<94%).

Contraindications

Inspiratory muscle training, such as training with POWERbreathe, is not recommended for patients with certain conditions, including the following:

  • Asthma patients who have low symptom perception and suffer from frequent, severe exacerbations or with an abnormally low perception of dyspnoea
  • If a patient is suffering from a ruptured eardrum or any other condition of the ear
  • Patients with marked elevated left ventricular end-diastolic volume and pressure
  • Patients with worsening heart failure signs and symptoms after RMT / IMT

POWERbreathe Classic Load Selection Range Table

Please note: Heavy resistance is only for those who have reached maximum loading on a medium resistance model. If you start with a heavy resistance model, you will not experience the benefits of POWERbreathe Plus training and may struggle to acheive higher levels due to the faster progression between loads.

Precise load settings may vary due to: (1) the analogue nature of the calibrated spring tensioner and the precision with which the load is selected; (2) a small effect of inspiratory flow rate upon spring compression such that high inspiratory flow rates lead to greater spring compression, and a small increase in load.

This effect is common to all spring loaded devices, and its size is magnified by increasing spring range (it is larger in a spring with a maximum range of 90cmH2O compared with one with half this range), it is also greater at lower absolute load settings.

Choose Light Resistance:

  • If you exercise / are physically active for less than 2.5 hours per week and have no breathing problems
  • If you exercise / are physically active for less than 2.5 hours per week and have breathing problems – minor/moderate
  • If you exercise / are physically active for more than 2.5 hours per week and have severe breathing problems

Choose Medium Resistance:

  • If you exercise / are physically active for more than 2.5 hours per week and have no breathing problems
  • If you exercise / are physically active for more than 2.5 hours per week and have some breathing problems that are not severe

Choose Heavy Resistance:

  • Only if you have reached the highest load setting on a POWERbreathe Medium Resistance model first.

Keeping a record of the training level reached and the number of breaths successfully completed per session will help you analyse your progress.

    Since my last review in 2012 I have used the power breathe on a regular basis. I recently traveled to the Himalayas on a motor cycle (Royal Enfield) adventure to the worlds Highest motor able pass- Khadung-La.I had no breathing problems, it works. I still practice and teach Taekwon-Do on a regular basis.

    The benefits of training the lungs in this way is immeasurable
    When I informed my consultants/doctors that I had purchased one they were pleased and spoke of the benefits of using it. However, they did not offer to prescribe. There needs to be a bigger campaign to bring Powerbreathe equipment and training to the health industry. My awareness of it was only because of my involvement in the fitness industry. The benefits of training the lungs in this way is immeasurable! I have found excellent results and recommend it to anyone who has breathing difficulties or those who wish to increase their lung capacity for sport or fitness. Let’s get Powerbreathe equipment/training recognised and widely available in treatment plans for people who struggle to breathe!!

    I’m not sure. I feel worse after using the Powerbreathe or any breathing gadget and I don’t know why.

Would you like to send an email to enquiries@powerbreathe.com letting them know which POWERbreathe IMT device you have and how you feel after using it and they should be able to advise you. It may simply be that you’re training too hard, on a higher load than your breathing muscles are able to cope with at the moment. 30 breaths, twice a day

Scientifically proven POWERbreathe IMT regime is for 30 breaths, twice a day.

How to use:

  • Put nose clip on, pushing nostrils together (optional).
  • Holding device, place the mouthpiece in your mouth.
  • Ensure lips cover outer shield to make a seal.
  • Find your starting level (refer to manual).
  • Take a fast, forceful breath in through your mouth.
  • Breathe out slowly and passively.
  • Do this for 30 breaths, twice a day.

The standard unit used to measure breathing resistance is cmH20, which is short for “Centimetres of water“.

This table shows how each device in the Classic series (Light, Medium & Heavy) compares to one another. The levels 1-9 are all manually adjustable on the device at any time, and you should increase the level from 1 through to 9, over time as your breathing strength improves.

Centimeters of Water is a unit used to measure pressure on a small scale. It refers to how much pressure is needed to move a 1cm column of water.

There are no safety reasons for preventing young children (above 7 years of age) from using POWERbreathe. However, the following factors may affect their ability to use the device effectively: 

  • They must be able to fit the mouthpiece in their mouth. The POWERbreathe Plus mouthpiece is smaller and therefore more suited to children. 
  • They must be old enough to understand how to effectively perform the breathing exercises. 
  • They must have the motivation themselves or the parental encouragement to ensure that they continue to perform the exercises. 
  • They should only use POWERbreathe under the supervision of an adult.

Inspiratory muscle training has been most widely used in patients with COPD. IMT is particularly helpful in this patient group, as they have primary weakness of their inspiratory muscles.
