We all need a certain amount of blood pressure. It’s this that gets your blood moving from your heart to your brain and circulating around your body. The force of blood flowing against the walls of your arteries (blood pressure) will naturally vary throughout the day. But if your heart is working too hard to pump blood around your body, then your blood pressure may be high. This is known as hypertension which can lead to heart failure, heart attack or stroke.

If you experience consistently high blood pressure your GP is likely to offer you medication to lower it, along with recommendations for lifestyle changes, such as increasing physical activity. But research is now investigating ways of lowering blood pressure naturally, with deep breathing exercises.

Lower Blood Pressure Naturally

This observational study provides evidence of short-term decreases in blood pressure, in both automated systolic and diastolic blood pressures, following periods of deep breathing.

This article in Breathe, the European Respiratory Journal, explains how we have known for some time that heart rate increases while arterial blood pressure decreases, when you breathe in using your inspiratory muscles.

A key finding of this research (Daniel Craighead et al; 2021) is that 30 breaths using the POWERbreathe K-Series Inspiratory Muscle Training device (IMT) will lower blood pressure. The University of Colorado’s findings show that approximately 5-minutes of POWERbreathe IMT lowers blood pressure as much as aerobic exercise and more than some medications.

Drug-Free Breathing Training

Because POWERbreathe IMT is drug-free, it has no side effects or drug interactions and can be used alongside your regular medication; just speak to your GP first. Read Precautions and Contraindications.

POWERbreathe IMT uses the principles of resistance training to exercise your breathing muscles. You simply breathe in through the device against an adjustable resistance, which you increase as your breathing strength and stamina improve. It is often referred to as a ‘dumbbell for your diaphragm’.

The resistance makes your inspiratory breathing muscles work harder. This improves your breathing strength, stamina and resistance to breathing fatigue. As a result, exercise will start to feel easier. And exercise – or any physical activity – can help you to manage your blood pressure.

Research papers, original studies and review articles show benefits of POWERbreathe IMT for medical conditions.
