Description
The POWERbreathe Classic Heavy Resistance device is designed for those with already exceptionally strong breathing muscles, offering the most challenging breathing load available in our range of breathing trainers. This advanced level is better suited to elite athletes, such as rowers with highly developed lung capacity, who have already mastered the Medium Resistance training levels.
This heavy resistance model is our most challenging manual device and should only be used once you have reached the maximum threshold on the Classic Medium Resistance.
The effectiveness of your breathing is influenced by the condition of your breathing muscles. Strong, healthy breathing muscles lead to greater fitness, reduction in breathing problems and optimal sports performance. This can all be achieved by strengthening your diaphragm with breathing training using the POWERbreathe Classic Heavy Resistance device.
Completing inspiratory muscle training with breathing trainers will result in the following benefits:
Strengthen your diaphragm- Breathing training with the POWERbreathe Classic Heavy Resistance strengthens your diaphragm rather than your lungs. This is because your lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs, and not muscle, and so cannot be strengthened.
9 adjustable levels- The breathing device has 9 levels of resistance – you move up to the next level when the resistance no longer challenges you. The range between each training level is broader than that offered by the light resistance model and medium resistance model.
As your breathing muscles become stronger and you move up one of the training levels by increasing the resistance, there is a larger increase in cmH2O, making training more of a challenge.
The device offers the heaviest resistance to breathing in, provided by the adjustable spring-loaded valve. This ‘load’ training is similar to weightlifting, and provides a variable level of load setting (weight lifted) in increments of 30cmH2O, from 10cmH2O to 250cmH2O. This is the widest load range between training levels out of all of our Classic devices.
Results after 4-6 weeks- If you consistently follow the training regime of 30 breaths, twice a day you should see results in 4-6 weeks. You will feel less breathless during exertion and have increased stamina.
Inspiratory muscle training with POWERbreathe is scientifically proven. Learn more about how the POWERbreathe IMT device works in our guide.

Which Resistance?
For most users who don’t have a breathing condition, we recommend starting with our Medium Resistance device. It provides ample training load to strengthen your breathing muscles, improve breathing stamina and reduce breathing fatigue. Only after reaching the top level and maximum breathing load on the Medium Resistance should you consider progressing to this Heavy Resistance device. This ensures a safe and effective training progression, tailored to your individual capabilities.
Adjustable Load Selection Range
Please note: Heavy resistance is only for those who have reached maximum loading on a medium resistance model. If you start with a heavy resistance model, you will not experience the benefits of POWERbreathe Plus training and may struggle to acheive higher levels due to the faster progression between loads.
Precise load settings may vary due to: (1) the analogue nature of the calibrated spring tensioner and the precision with which the load is selected; (2) a small effect of inspiratory flow rate upon spring compression such that high inspiratory flow rates lead to greater spring compression, and a small increase in load.
This effect is common to all spring loaded devices, and its size is magnified by increasing spring range (it is larger in a spring with a maximum range of 90cmH2O compared with one with half this range), it is also greater at lower absolute load settings.

I bought this in c2011 and dusted it off a few weeks ago. I wanted to see if it can help improve my respiratory rate, which my fitness wearable reports to me every morning. That didn’t budge, but my heart rate variability (a measure of fitness) jumped by about 10-15% in the first week and has stayed that high ever since. My resting heart rate has also lowered by 3 bpm, I’m amazed it has such a strong effect. I’m planning to run a Cooper test to confirm that my VO2max is higher but the results I’m seeing from the HRV are seriously impressive. I would say that I probably suit the medium resistance better, with the heavy I can only just cope with level 1 and it’s taken me weeks to progress a quarter turn (level 1.25).

Have had a red one for 10 years. Used it intermittently during that time. Being over 70 and contemplating the COVID-19 virus pandemic, I started using again and am very happy that it is still working. Can feel a difference already and expect to keep working with it as this viral menace continues to plague all of us.

I’ve been using my POWERbreathe for over 17 years I’ve been using my POWERbreathe for over 17 years. Bought it from Birmingham University before it went on the open market.
I’m 79 years-old and it’s got me through several marathons, heart surgery and other ageing complaints.
Recent lung capacity tests show I’m above average. I’m sure it’s because of my years of use of the POWERbreathe.
