Even if you rotate while breathing, the thorax and pelvis remain connected by tension. It is important to keep them in place during #swimming and #running.

Living with a lung condition can be hard. Over the past year, the pandemic has taught us just how important it is to love our lungs.

- Inspiratory Muscle Training Benefits Everyone -
People who suffer from #asthma, #bronchitis, #emphysema and #COPD will benefit from POWERbreathe IMT. However, many others will adopt #IMT as part of their sports training. This is because #IMST strengthens the breathing muscles, improving breathing stamina and strength. In fact, studies show that regular IMT increases your #endurance during exercise or sports activities, such as #running and #cycling.

When you breathe normally, you typically use between 10 to 15 per cent of your total lung capacity. However, with Inspiratory Muscle Training, you can typically increase the amount of lung capacity you’re able to use. Deeper breathing with IMT uses a bit more energy, just like any other type of strength training. But with each deep breath, it also allows more oxygen to enter your bloodstream. And, at the same time, you’re strengthening your breathing muscles. Performing 30 breaths twice a day with POWERbreathe IMT for at least six weeks significantly reduces the amount of oxygen you’ll require while exercising. This results in more oxygen being available for your other working muscles, such as your legs while running or cycling.

BREATHING FACTS
It’s a breathing fact that there are differences in breathing capacity between the sexes. For instance, females have disproportionately smaller radial rib cage dimensions and shorter #diaphragm compared to males, making it harder to move air in and out of the lungs. But it’s not only this that affects the amount of #lungcapacity we have, but age, body composition and ethnicity are factors too.

At rest, an adult will generally breathe around 12-20 times a minute. This equates to just a few litres of air moving in and out of your lungs. However, during vigorous exercise this can raise to around 100 litres per minute.

Breathing Facts:
- Expiration is normally passive (only during heavy exercise workloads does it become forced).
- #Inspiratorymuscles play a vital role in the efficiency of breathing at rest and also during exercise.
- Strength of the inspiratory muscles reduces with age (approximately age 25 years).
- Weaker inspiratory muscles are usually highlighted with #breathlessness, especially in the elderly.
- At rest we use as little as 8-12 litres of air per minute.
- During exercise we can use around 100 litres of air per minute. Elite male athletes may even use twice this amount.
- #Respiratoryrate is a significant predictor of critical illness.

The cause of the unforgettable infection that is #COVID19 is the viral respiratory disease, SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), with many people experiencing #respiratoryproblems as a result. So, it’s no surprise that we are turning to #breathwork for nourishing both body and mind. In fact, breath work is now one of the fastest growing #wellness trends.

Breathwork encompasses the use of #breathingexercises and #breathingtechniques as a means of therapy for #selfhelp. This is because it helps to relieve physical, mental and emotional #stress and tension. For instance, a deep, diaphragmatic breath can stimulate your vagus nerve and lower stress responses. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system, also known as your ‘rest and digest’ system. In fact, a 2021 scientific study shows that diaphragmatic breathing training using POWERbreathe Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) lowers blood pressure too.

BENEFITS OF BETTER BREATHING
Training your breathing muscles (the #diaphragm, the muscles between the ribs (intercostal muscles), the muscles in the neck, and the abdominal muscles) to improve their strength, power and endurance has benefits for everyone. Here are just a few ways you could benefit from stronger breathing muscles:

In sport and exercise:
• Improves #fitness and #sportperformance
• Reduces whole body effort, so exercise feels easier
• Speeds up #lactate clearance

In performing arts:
• Enhances the ability to inflate the lungs (#breathedeeper)
• Enhances the ability to #controlyourbreath (how you inhale governs how you exhale)
• Warms-up breathing muscles prior to performance

In health and medical:
• Reduces #breathlessness and restores breathing power
• Improves #qualityoflife in people with debilitating breathing conditions
• Reduced consumption of medication of up to 79% in #asthma patients

In the uniformed services:
• Increased time to exhaustion during a standard laboratory #treadmilltest
• Reduced the rate of air use from the breathing cylinder used by firefighters (increasing wear time by around 1.5 min from a 15 min cylinder)
• Reduced #heartrate

RESPIRATORY MUSCLE TRAINING AND VIRAL INFECTION Be RESPIRATORY MUSCLE TRAINING AND VIRAL INFECTION
Because of the newness of this pandemic, there is only a small amount of research investigating the role of breathing exercises in reducing respiratory failure. However, there is existing research that supports the use of pre-operative Inspiratory Muscle Training for reducing the risk of post-operative complications.

POWERBREATHE IMT IN PRE-OP, POST-OP AND #ICU
Medical professionals are enrolling patients to use POWERbreathe IMT pre-operatively in order to improve post-operative outcomes. The intention is to increase their respiratory fitness prior to surgery, using the most advanced, electronic POWERbreathe K-Series. This will stand patients in good stead after surgery. So, the fitter you are before surgery the more quickly you’re likely to recover.

The current consensus of opinion is that POWERbreathe IMT can be very important before and after any period of #hospitalisation. The time in the middle, #weaning from a #ventilator, is more difficult with COVID-19 patients. This is due to the potential spread of the #virus through respiratory droplets. However, in normal circumstances, use of the POWERbreathe KH2 for ventilator weaning is proving popular and effective.

IMPROVE YOUR RESPIRATORY FITNESS
Improving your respiratory fitness following #fullrecovery from COVID-19 is possible with exercises to help breathing. The POWERbreathe Medic Plus #breathingtraining device provides deep breathing exercises for COVID patients who are in full recovery, where safe and practicable, taking care not to exacerbate the condition; trying too hard too soon. We suggest you only begin using IMT after consultation with your GP after full recovery, because this coronavirus transmits between people through respiratory droplets and contact routes.

EXPERT OPINION AND FEEDBACK
Check our website and read about NHS Paramedic who shared his experience of COVID-19 and how the POWERbreathe Medic Plus was helping with his recovery.

However, all inspiratory muscle training devices are not created equal. There are different types of ‘weight-lifting’, or ‘loading’ for exercising your #inspiratory muscles.

1. #FlowResistance
This is the most basic type of breathing trainer and consists of holes of varying size that restricts the airflow as you breathe in. There is no calibration of load in centimetres of water (cmH2O), which is the unit of pressure most commonly used to measure breathing on #respirators and #ventilators.

2. #PressureThreshold Resistance
This uses a calibrated, spring-loaded valve that will only open once you are able to generate enough #inspiratorypressure. Pressure is measured in centimetres of water (cmH2O). It is a more scientific type of training than flow resistance because you have 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱.

3. Electronic Tapered Resistance
All POWERbreathe K-Series breathing devices use this method of resistance. This type of training uses a computer-controlled valve to 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵, as you progress through the breath.

Also you are able to measure breathing volume, load, #power & #energy. Finally, the POWERbreathe K-Series inspiratory muscle training devices feature a Strength-Index test which is unique to POWERbreathe.

More information about IMT and different trainers can be found in our blog (link in the bio).

Expiratory Muscle Training – Why Do It? During Expiratory Muscle Training – Why Do It?

During inspiration, you actively use your #inspiratory muscles to breathe in, primarily your #diaphragm and external #intercostals. #Expiration however is generally passive. This is because you naturally exhale as your inspiratory muscles relax. As a result, air passively leaves your lungs.

Normally, during breathing at rest, you will not be using any expiratory muscles. However, during heavy ‘exercise’ your expiratory muscles will play an active role in breathing. During forced expiration, when there’s a need to empty more air from your lungs than normal, the accessory muscles of your abdomen (rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, obliques) and the internal intercostals, contract, forcing the diaphragm upwards and pushing more air out.

Furthermore, if your respiratory passageways are narrowed or blocked with #mucus, such as in #chronicbronchitis, expiration becomes an active process.

Expiratory muscle training is not as widely studied as inspiratory muscle training. However, the expiratory #breathingmuscles are likely to respond to the overload principle of #resistancetraining, in the same way as inspiratory muscles and skeletal muscles.

✨Effects of Expiratory Muscle Training
There is evidence that #EMST improves #maximalexpiratorypressure (#MEP) in certain #medicalconditions. Maximal expiratory pressure is a measurement that reflects the #strength of your #abdominalmuscles and other expiratory muscles. It is an indicator of #respiratoryweakness. Therefore, strengthening your expiratory muscles with EMT is beneficial as it will improve your maximal expiratory pressure.

Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (#EMST), along Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (#EMST), along with Inspiratory Muscle Training (#IMT), is an element of Respiratory Muscle Training (#RMT). #Respiratory Muscle Training is a treatment that uses both these therapies to help you enhance your #breathing muscle function. This may be to improve your #health, relieve symptoms of a medical condition, improve general physical and breathing #fitness and increase sports #performance.

During normal expiration, your #lungs will start to deflate as your inspiratory muscles relax. However, during periods of active breathing, such as #extremeexercise or #coughing, your expiratory muscles may contract to force air out of your lungs.

EMST, or #EMT (expiratory muscle training), will improve the breathing muscle strength and #endurance of your expiratory muscles. These are your internal #intercostals, rectus abdominis (the main expiratory muscle), external and internal obliques and transversus abdominis.
