Description

Phlegm is produced by the lower airways and is a type of mucus. You usually find phlegm in the back of the throat or in the lungs, whereas mucus is found inside the nose. Phlegm is usually thicker and more viscous than mucus that can be cleared by blowing your nose.

Getting rid of phlegm however is slightly more difficult and needs to be coughed up. Phlegm clearance is very important for people with conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis, because phlegm contains virus and dead bacteria.

Having clear lungs is important for good health. Clear lungs ensure that oxygen passes to the organs in our body, meaning they function well. The Shaker Deluxe is a gravity-dependent OPEP device (Oscillatory Positive Expiratory Pressure) designed to mobilise mucus, catarrh and other pulmonary secretions. Simple and ergonomic, it’s easy to use and requires no assembly. A 2018 study found ‘gravity-dependent devices were the ones to display close mechanical performances and produce optimal operational parameters at the simulated exhalation settings.’

How it Works

The Shaker Deluxe helps to open the airways, improving breathing efficiency. This reduces the risk of infection, fatigue and breathlessness. Inside the Shaker Deluxe there is a weighted ball that moves up and down as you breathe out through the device. This rapid rise-and-fall motion creates gentle vibrations and resistance in your airways. These vibrations loosen mucus and help open smaller air passages, improving airflow. As the mucus is thinned and dislodged, it moves to the larger airways where it can be easily cleared with gentle coughing.

The next-generation design of the Shaker Deluxe provides improved airflow and stronger vibrations, increasing mucus clearance (expectoration) and helping to reduce breathlessness and fatigue and lowering the risk of infection. It’s particularly beneficial for people with COPD, Cystic Fibrosis, Bronchiectasis, or Bronchitis.

Available in different models with varying pressure levels (starting from 8 cmHâ‚‚O to 11 cmHâ‚‚O), the Shaker Deluxe range includes versions suitable for adults and children, ensuring the right level of support for every user.

Durable and economical, the Shaker Deluxe can be used repeatedly – simply wash it after each use. It offers an effective, drug-free way to clear mucus, improve lung function, and support long-term respiratory health.

Range of pressures to suit breathing ability – Each Shaker Deluxe mucus clearance device requires a minimum pressure of cmH2O when exhaling through, to be most beneficial. The Shaker Deluxe Light and Shaker Deluxe Kids require the least amount of pressure and the Shaker Deluxe requires the most.

Economical – Prescription asthma inhalers and respiratory aids can be costly and need to be replaced. Whereas the Shaker Deluxe can be used repeatedly, all you need to do is wash it after use.

How to Use

For best results, use the Shaker Deluxe mucus clearance device while sitting or lying down, as you may feel light-headed during use. If you do become dizzy, stop the exercise and breathe calmly through your nose until the feeling passes.

The ability to rotate the mouthpiece enables you to use the Shaker device comfortably while reclining, a technique physiotherapists call postural drainage. When lying down, keep your head slightly elevated to allow the Shaker to be held at the correct angle.

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Hold the Shaker Deluxe firmly in a horizontal position.
  2. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, inhale slowly and deeply through your nose to fill your lungs and hold your breath for 2–3 seconds.
  3. Keeping your lips sealed around the mouthpiece, exhale slowly and steadily through the device. Exhaling will make the vibrations.
  4. Take a few normal breaths through your nose, then repeat steps 2 and 3.
  5. Continue for around 10 repetitions, or until your chest feels clearer. The number of repetitions may vary depending on your condition or professional guidance.
  6. When mucus moves into the larger airways, cough gently to clear it and expel into a tissue.

You may need to adjust the angle of the device or the strength of your exhalation to achieve the most effective vibration in your chest. Experimenting gently will help you find the position that produces the best results for you.

Shaker  Light

The Shaker Light requires a minimum pressure of 8 cmHâ‚‚O, making it easier to use for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions and weakness such as COPD, asthma, or emphysema. It provides gentle yet effective airway clearance to support easier breathing, improve lung performance, and reduce breathlessness.

Shaker Kids

  • Minimum pressure required when using Shaker Deluxe Kids: 8cmH2O.
  • Can be used by children who suffer from seasonal symptoms or chronic conditions.
  • Designed for children, as, in addition to requiring a low expiratory pressure of only 8cmH20, the Shaker Deluxe Kids includes a pack of stickers so that children can personalise their device, as well as, an easy-to-follow, child friendly user-manual that includes a colouring section to help make the treatment feel less of a medical intervention.
  • If your child is under 7-years-old and you feel they have the ability to use the device and understand the exercise, then we recommend you check with your healthcare professional and ensure strict supervision is provided

Shaker Medic Plus

The Shaker Medic Plus can be sterilised in an autoclave making it ideal for clinical settings.

There is a weighted ball inside the Shaker Medic Plus which raises when breathing into the device and then falls under its own weight. This rise and fall action happens extremely quickly and feels like a vibration. The generation of these oscillations or interruptions induce shear forces on the mucus layer and, mechanically reduce the viscoelasticity of airway mucus; thus, enhancing mucociliary clearance and ciliary beat.

Research and Evidence

Care and Maintenance

Because your Shaker Deluxe will be exposed to saliva during use, we recommend that your Shaker Deluxe is cleaned after use. Remove the mouthpiece, unscrew the back case and remove the ball and internal cone. Wash all parts in soapy water, rinse with clean water, dry thoroughly and re-assemble. Once a week we recommend that the device is cleansed using approved cleansing tablets.

How to look after your Shaker

Precautions and Contraindications

  • Shaker is a single user device and for hygiene purposes, should not be shared with other users.
  • Shaker should not be used by individuals with pneumothorax.
  • Individuals with severe cardiovascular disease should only use Shaker on advice from a Doctor.
  • Do not make changes to any prescribed medication or prescribed treatment programme without consulting your doctor.
  • Adult supervision may be required, when being used by children under the age of 16. The Shaker contains small parts (i.e. the small steel ball used within the casing to ‘shake’ the mucus) and is not a toy. However, if the child is the minimum age for using this device (7-years-old) and you feel they have the ability to use the device and understand the exercise, then strict supervision must be provided at all times due to the potential choking hazard of small parts (e.g. the weighted steel ball) when taken apart, for instance, when cleaning.
  • If you become dizzy while using Shaker, stop the exercise and breathe calmly through the nose until the feeling stops. If dizziness occurs every time you use the Shaker, inhale and exhale without the device every 3rd breath. Should dizziness persist, or any other problems arise whilst using the Shaker, please stop using the device immediately and consult your physician.
  • The Shaker is designed to be used for mobilising pulmonary secretions. No other use is intended or implied. This product is not intended to diagnose, cure or prevent any disease.
  • Only devices sold in sealed packaging should be used.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight.
