Description

Phlegm is produced by the lower airways. It is a type of mucus that you cough up from the lungs. It protects your airways. Mucus is found all over the body, lining various tracts (respiratory, digestive). It protects the body from infection and keeps you healthy. Coughing up a little bit of phlegm can be normal, but people with lung conditions like asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis may produce more phlegm. Coughing up more phlegm can be a sign of a worsening lung condition or airway inflammation.

Getting rid of phlegm is very important for people with chronic respiratory conditions. Phlegm can contain viruses and dead bacteria; a build up of phlegm can lead to infections.

The Shaker Deluxe is a gravity-dependent OPEP device (Oscillatory Positive Expiratory Pressure) designed to loosen/mobilise mucus, catarrh and other pulmonary secretions. When you breathe out through the device, vibrations and positive pressure loosen phlegm so that it is easier to cough up and be expelled from the lungs.

How The Shaker Deluxe Works

The POWERbreathe Shaker Deluxe is a gravity-dependent OPEP device (Oscillatory Positive Expiratory Pressure) designed to loosen and mobilise mucus, catarrh and other pulmonary secretions, as well as open the airways, to improve breathing. An OPEP device like the Shaker Deluxe, helps users to cough up mucus more easily, reducing the risk of infection and easing breathlessness.

Inside the Shaker Deluxe there is a weighted ball that moves up and down as you breathe out. This rapid rise-and-fall motion creates gentle vibrations and positive resistance in your airways. These vibrations loosen mucus and the pressure helps to open the airways, improving airflow. As the mucus loosens and dislodges, it moves to the larger airways, where it can be easily cleared with gentle coughing.

The Shaker Deluxe is a new and improved version of the Shaker Classic. It provides:

How to Use

For best results, use the Shaker Deluxe mucus clearance device while sitting or lying down, as you may feel light-headed during use. If you do become dizzy, stop the exercise and breathe calmly through your nose until the feeling passes.

The ability to rotate the mouthpiece enables you to use the Shaker device comfortably while reclining, a technique physiotherapists call postural drainage. When lying down, keep your head slightly elevated to allow the Shaker to be held at the correct angle.

A step-by-step guide on how to use the POWERbreathe Shaker Deluxe:

  1. Hold the Shaker Deluxe firmly in a horizontal position.
  2. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, inhale slowly and deeply through your nose to fill your lungs. Keeping your lips sealed around the mouthpiece, exhale slowly and steadily through the device. Exhaling will make the ball move and create vibrations.
  3. Take a few normal breaths through your nose, then repeat steps 2 and 3. 
  4. When mucus moves into the larger airways, or around 5 exhales have been performed, cough (sometimes called ‘huff cough’ to expel it into a tissue.
  5. Continue for around 10 repetitions, or until your chest feels clearer. The number of repetitions may vary depending on your condition or professional guidance.

You may need to adjust the angle of the device or the strength of your exhalation to achieve the most effective vibration in your chest. Experimenting gently will help you find the position that produces the best results for you.

The POWERbreathe Shaker Deluxe is suitable for healthy people experiencing seasonal symptoms, such as a chesty cough, flu, or bronchitis and hayfever. This model delivers stronger vibrations and greater airflow resistance than other models, making it highly effective at clearing mucus and improving lung function for those with temporary respiratory congestion. Shaker Light

The POWERbreathe Shaker Deluxe Light has a lower minimum pressure, making it easier for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions and weakness. This can include COPD, asthma, or emphysema. The vibrations from the Light model are gentler than those of the Shaker Deluxe, yet remain effective for airway clearance, supporting easier breathing, improved lung performance and reduced breathlessness. Shaker Kids

The POWERbreathe Shaker Deluxe Kids requires the same lower minimum pressure as the Light model. It is suitable for children who suffer from seasonal symptoms or chronic conditions. The device includes a pack of stickers so children can personalise their Shaker. It also comes with easy-to-follow, child-friendly instructions that include a colouring section to help make the treatment feel less of a medical intervention. If your child is under 7 years old and you feel they have the ability to use the device and understand the exercise, we recommend you check with your healthcare professional and ensure strict supervision is provided at all times due to small parts. Shaker Medic Plus

The Shaker Medic Plus comes with two balls allowing two different pressure options: 4cmHâ‚‚O and 8cmHâ‚‚O. This device is made with slightly different material so that it can withstand high temperatures and can be cleaned in an autoclave, therefore enabling multi-person use in a clinical environment.

Research and Evidence

Care and Maintenance

You will need to clean your POWERbreathe Shaker Deluxe after every use because it will be exposed to saliva. To do this, remove the mouthpiece, uncap the back cover and remove the ball and internal cone. Wash all parts in soapy water, rinse with clean water, dry thoroughly and reassemble. Once a week, we recommend that the device is cleansed using approved cleansing tablets.

How to look after your Shaker

Precautions and Contraindications

  • The Shaker is a single user device and for hygiene purposes, should not be shared with other users.
  • The Shaker should not be used by individuals with pneumothorax.
  • Individuals with severe cardiovascular disease should only use a Shaker on advice from a Doctor.
  • Do not make changes to any prescribed medication or prescribed treatment programme without consulting your doctor.
  • Adult supervision may be required, when being used by children under the age of 16. The Shaker contains small parts (i.e. the small steel ball used within the casing to ‘shake’ the mucus) and is not a toy. However, if the child is the minimum age for using this device (7-years-old) and you feel they have the ability to use the device and understand the exercise, then strict supervision must be provided at all times due to the potential choking hazard of small parts (e.g. the weighted steel ball) when taken apart, for instance, when cleaning.
  • If you become dizzy while using the Shaker, stop the exercise and breathe calmly through the nose until the feeling stops. If dizziness occurs every time you use the Shaker, inhale and exhale without the device every 3rd breath. Should dizziness persist, or any other problems arise whilst using the Shaker, please stop using the device immediately and consult your physician.
  • The Shaker is designed to be used for mobilising pulmonary secretions. No other use is intended or implied. This product is not intended to diagnose, cure or prevent any disease.
  • Only devices sold in sealed packaging should be used.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight.
  • This product is sealed to maintain hygiene and cannot be returned if the seal is broken.

I just got mine in the mail and been using it for four days or so. I can't believe how effective it is in getting the mucus out. Why didn't my doctor tell me about this?

To be very honest, I was half expecting to be disappointed, as usual, like with the NEWEST prescription that they say is the be-all and end-all - only $$$ per month I don't have. But then, it worked and worked well!!
