Description

The POWERbreathe Classic Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) Range is our original series of breathing devices – trusted, proven, and still popular over two decades later. While your lungs can’t be trained like muscles, your diaphragm and other breathing muscles can become more powerful through regular resistance training. The POWERbreathe Classic helps you do just that. The POWERbreathe Classic works by providing resistance as you breathe in, like lifting weights for your breathing muscles.

Available in Medic, Light, Medium and Heavy resistance, the Classic series offers Inspiratory Muscle Training and supports all ability levels – from beginners and those with breathing issues to fit and active users looking to improve performance and endurance. Like weight training for your lungs, each device has 9 levels that provide an increasing challenge as your breathing muscles grow stronger.

How It Works

The POWERbreathe Plus uses a spring to weigh down a valve to create resistance as you inhale, just like lifting weights for your diaphragm. Using ‘Pressure Threshold’ technology, your breath must generate enough force to open (or lift) a valve and keep it open. Over time, this increases your lung power, helping you breathe easier and perform better.

Which Resistance

Most healthy adults can ‘lift’ a maximum load of between 75 and 120 ‘centimetres of water’ (cmH2O) which is what pressure is measured in. Optimum training is usually half this load, so between 37 and 60.

As an indication, our product specialist managed to get up to training at 90cmH2O when training for a marathon, but generally trains at between 60 – 75cmH2O.

We therefore recommend most people choose a Light Resistance device. Have a look at the comparison table for further information: Which Resistance?

Refer to our Adjustable Load Selection Range for further information.

Please note: Heavy resistance is only for those who have reached maximum loading on a medium resistance model. If you start with a heavy resistance model, you will not experience the benefits of POWERbreathe Plus training and may struggle to achieve higher levels due to the faster progression between loads.

Precise load settings may vary due to: (1) the analogue nature of the calibrated spring tensioner and the precision with which the load is selected; (2) a small effect of inspiratory flow rate upon spring compression, such that high inspiratory flow rates lead to greater spring compression, and a small increase in load.

This effect is common to all spring-loaded devices, and its size is magnified by increasing spring range (it is larger in a spring with a maximum range of 90cmH20 compared with one with half this range), and it is also greater at lower absolute load settings.

Training Diary

All it takes is:

• 30 breaths, twice a day
• 4–6 weeks for noticeable improvement

Keeping a record of the training level reached and the number of breaths successfully completed each session will help you analyse your progress. Or upgrade to a POWERbreathe Plus IMT device and pair it with the POWERbreathe Smart Adaptor to track your progress on the ActiBreathe® App.
