Your POWERbreathe Classic or Plus breathing trainer will be exposed to saliva during use and we recommend that you clean it frequently to keep it hygienic and in good working order. It is recommended that you rinse your device after each use in warm running water and allow it to dry before your next training session. Once a week soak your POWERbreathe breathing device for about ten minutes in warm water that contains POWERbreathe cleansing solution. After cleansing, hold the IMT device upside down under a running tap so that water can run through the device to rinse it thoroughly. Shake off excess water and leave on a clean towel to dry. If further cleaning is necessary, such as if saliva is sticking the device together making it difficult to use, you may disassemble your POWERbreathe Classic or Plus IMT device into its main component parts only and clean as above. Please be careful not lose any of the components and always refer to your user manual when disassembling your device. Please clarify – how long do I leave device in POWERbreathe sterilising solution. Box states 30 mins but this site states 10mins, which is correct please. Thank you Reply
Hi Elaine. The video suggests cleaning your device for 10 minutes in warm water, but if you want to sterilise your unit then use the sterilising tablets, using the instructions on the box which as you say, would be for 30 minutes for a thorough clean. Reply
I have purchased the powerbreathe cleansing tablets and on one site you say they are not licensed for use in the uk and on another you say they are licensed for use in the uk – please clarify. I feel nervous using such a strong solution just in case I didn’t rinse enough – can I clarify that Milton, which is used for cleaning babies bottles is acceptable to use. Thank you Elaine Oxfordshire Reply
The POWERbreathe Cleansing Tablets are available to purchase in the UK and have been tested as safe to use to clean your POWERbreathe better breathing devices. The only reason that we are unable to ship our Cleansing Tablets to the USA is due to customs restrictions. Finally, Milton is considered safe for cleaning surfaces, tools, utensils, baby bottles and feeding pumps, so would be suitable for use with your POWERbreathe device too. Reply
Hello Ro and thank you for your enquiry. It sounds as though the device has not dried out thoroughly after use and before storing. So I would certainly break the Classic or Plus device down into its main constituent parts (mouthpiece, main body and handle/ cover) and give it all a proper cleansing using the POWERbreathe Cleansing Tablets. Then rinse it all in running water and leave it to thoroughly air dry. Then, after each use, thoroughly rinse through and dry before storing. Reply
The POWERbreathe Cleansing Tablets that we do recommend are not permitted for resale in the USA due to FDA restrictions on the active ingredient and I do not think there are any other similar brands in the US that use this ingredient either. This is the only cleaning solution that has been clinically tested on the POWERbreathe devices, so we cannot recommend another brand/sterilising solution with different ingredients. However, you can use warm soapy water to soak and clean your POWERbreathe device, ensuring that you thoroughly rinse the device through after cleaning and then shaking off excess water and leaving it on a clean towel to dry. This, when done regularly, is sufficient for keeping your POWERbreathe device clean. Reply
How do I clean my device in the US? I can not buy the powerbreathe cleansing tablets here because they are not FDA approved. What would be a good alternative? Reply
The POWERbreathe cleansing tablets are similar to those used for cleaning a baby’s bottle and are safe for anything that comes into contact with the mouth. So you could use something in the USA that has a similar use. Alternatively, you could use a washing-up liquid, as this too is going to be used on utensils etc that come into contact with your mouth (and saliva). Hot soapy water should remove the ‘stickiness’ that is caused by saliva and moisture that the mouthpiece is exposed to. Just be sure you rinse it completely, and dry it completely, so there’s no risk of you breathing any of it in. Reply
Hi Barbara, yes it can. It doesn’t contain any electrical parts so the entire device is safe to immerse in water. Reply
You advice against disassembling the device, but if kept all together when soaked, water is going to accumulate in the area where the upper body and lower body touch one another, and is going to stick there for long, thus facilitating bacteria to grow. Can you please clarify? Also not convinced about using those tablets, the chemicals used have a relatively low toxicity but over a long period of time, I don’t think it’s wise to do it, particularly on a device that one has to breathe through. Thanks Reply
Thank you Luca for your comment. If you feel confident in breaking break down your device into 4 parts and put them together again (which can be done), then please do. These can then be washed in hot soapy water. The active ingredient in our cleansing tablets is the same/similar to that also used for cleaning babies bottles so the toxicity does need to be extremely low, however it is designed to do the job. You can disassemble the device into 4 parts: body, mouthpiece, handle and valve and wash in warm soapy water and then use the tablets occasionally. The reason we say not to disassemble the device is because some people have pulled everything apart, losing bits in the process and then not reassembling the device correctly. We hope that helps Luca. Best wishes to you. Reply
Hello and thank you for your enquiry. The POWERbreathe IMT devices in the Classic and Plus series are single person use only. However, the POWERbreathe K-Series and KH-Series (developed specifically for Healthcare Professionals and their patients) offer additional valve heads and so can be used by more than one person. The TrySafe filters also offer the opportunity of using a device with a patient as they are disposable. As a healthcare professional, you can view the KH-Series – and a Knowledge Base of research – by registering here. Best wishes to you. Reply
