John Carlow is a 45-year-old Personal Trainer, Nutritionist, and Karate Instructor. At an early age, he was diagnosed with asthma, which restricted his ability to be as active as his school friends. Today, however, John is a completely different person. Thanks to his POWERbreathe device, he has reduced his asthma attacks and reliance on rescue inhalers. You can read his story below.

About John

I am a reformed smoker (gave up in 2011), karaoke king, frustrated ballroom dancer and sometime musician (I haven’t picked up a guitar except to dust it for several years!).

John’s Asthma Diagnosis

I was diagnosed with asthma around age 9, when I was at primary school. I used to request, and use, two blue asthma pumps per month and struggled to hit much more than 400 l/m peak flow. I struggled to exercise as exercise triggered asthma attacks.

POWERbreathe Reduced My Asthma Attacks

I have owned a POWERbreathe for about ten years. In the early days, I was less disciplined in using it, but 4-5 years ago, I started to use it religiously as I was determined to get my 2nd Kyu Karate brown belt. Since then, I have used it day and night with rare exception.

Since using POWERbreathe regularly, my lung capacity has increased by 50%. Asthma attacks are very rare and tend to only happen if I get a seasonal cold.

I have rescue inhalers in a drawer, unopened, but haven’t used one for almost a year. I don’t even carry one in my pocket anymore. I have greater confidence about exercising and I don’t have a meltdown if I don’t know where my inhaler is.

I can push my fitness training in ways I wouldn’t have dreamed of before. I think that when I had Covid, my stronger inspiratory muscles and larger lung capacity made it less bad than it would have been otherwise.

My Asthma Triggers

Anxiety about not having an inhaler to hand used to actually trigger attacks. Now I don’t have to worry about it, at all.

I used to be very anxious about engaging in anything approaching vigorous exercise, especially in the winter when the cold made my symptoms worse. I would panic and immediately start to wheeze if I didn’t know where my inhaler was.

My Asthma Management

I have a preventer inhaler, which I also use as directed (Fostair), but I believe that using POWERbreathe is an essential component in my asthma control regime. Before I started using my POWERbreathe daily, my asthma was definitely worse.

“My POWERbreathe plus has changed my life, and I would recommend them to anyone with asthma that could be better controlled.”

Asthma Won’t Stop Me From Singing

I have recently bought the expiratory trainer as I love singing and want to improve the power of my singing voice. It’s early days, but I think it has already helped.

John’s story is just one of many inspiring journeys with POWERbreathe that have transformed lives affected by asthma.
