Andrea Cunningham week 21 – The end of the road is in sight

Hi everyone I’m back at last with my 21st Journal and getting to the end of my 6month journals now with PowerBreathe….my god how time flies!  Well this week I’ve had my running shoes well and truly strapped to my feet!  Monday I went to body attack and then did a 7 mile run as well it seemed to go pretty well i.e. I didn’t want to keel over afterwards!  Then Tuesday I decided to give balance and combat a miss and did 13miles instead…it has to be said I did start to feel pretty light headed after this but I’m guessing it was because I had to run past numerous hotels and the smell of food was an absolute killer I was starving!  Wednesday then it was back to body attack and then 7 miles again….my legs were like blocks of lead that particular session of body attack was hardcore or maybe I just went at it harder than normal but every mile of that run I was out of breath and my legs felt horrible I was one happy girl to get home that night!!  Thursday then (still panicking about my lack of mileage) decided to run 10 miles this was better than Wednesday though I really really did not want to do it I was so tired and I literally must have said to myself just gotta get through tonight and then Friday is a day off lol…this marathon training may also be making me loose my marbles!

Friday then I took it easy and I’ve never been so glad to be inside my house – it’s starting to feel like I never see it!!  Saturday unfortunately I had to get up at the crack of dawn as there was a 10k race going on where I live so I need to get out and back before it started as part of it was directly in my route to and from home….anyway the sun was just rising so the first couple of miles were a tad torturous but then the sun came out and I was roasting toasting!  I managed 15miles this day – I really wanted to do 18 but I couldn’t figure out a route to get back to my house that bypassed the other runners but anyway I was absolutely knackered and starving as I hadn’t got up early enough for breakfast beforehand…that’ll teach me!  Has to be said though even though I was dead physically from the week my breathing during my runs was defiantly better!

Sunday then I was a very very lazy girl and watched a whole lot of rugby…very early in the morning unfortunately!  This week coming I’m going to tackle a 20miler at the weekend and this weekend will also be the last weekend I eat and drink anything “bad” well I’m certainly going to try anyway its going to be goodbye wine and chocolate and hello water and pasta…yawn!  It has to be said this part of the training I do not enjoy at all!  All this torture is because I’m running the Dublin marathon for Marie Curie Cancer Care so any spare pennies would be greatly appreciated www.justgiving.com/andreacunningham

Andrea Cunningham Week 20 – I’m back

Hi everyone I’m back at last with my 20th journal it’s been a while!!!  So I was off on holiday there in sunny Spain for 3 weeks and then last week was just mental with work so I didn’t get the opportunity to catch up with you all.  You’ll be please to know I packed my trainers and PowerBreathe for their holidays too though I wasn’t quite as productive as I had of hoped!!  When I landed it was 41 in the shade and suffering from asthma it did take me a couple of days to adjust to the humidity and I also to decrease the resistance on my PowerBreathe as I couldn’t do it at the level I’d reached.

After a couple of days (and now behind already with my training) I decided I had to face the run…though dreaded it.  I decided the only way I was going to be able to do was if it was first thing in the morning and getting up at 630am on your holidays isn’t fun!  I found a route that was 8miles in total so the first time I went it was “interesting” my chest and throat ended up hurting a lot probably because I was trying to breathe too hard even at that time it was roasting and the longer I was out the hotter it was getting and the less oxygen there appeared to be so I walked more than normal.  Nevertheless I persevered and did the same run 3 days in a row just to see if I would improve any…lol I didn’t!! I then took the next couple of days off and I have to admit I was pretty defeated at how hard I found it…and now starting to panic about being behind with the marathon training.  Few days later I decided to give it another go and did it for the following 3 days in a row…the first day was better than the rest as when I went on the second day my chest and throat hurt from the previous day so that day and the following weren’t so good unfortunately.  It has to be said though even though I did feel like I was going to pass out on a few occasions doing the 8milers during the day my breathing (even with sore chest muscles) was better.  Now way behind with my training I was still very deflated so I planned different routes with what I hoped was better air quality as I had been running through desert kind of land through salt lakes I decided to head for the sea and away from snake land so I took a couple of days off and then aimed for a 14 miler.  This was tough as the sun was fully out in all its glory and hot about 6 miles in and there is only so much water one can carry – it has to be said I hated every moment it felt like I was constantly struggling for air and was extremely happy to get back home.  The next day I did 13 miles but I completed different route and I included the pier which is a mile long so I ran up and down it about 5 times and then from home to it and back home again.  Halleluiah there was air here at least but about hour in it was so warm and so bright it was hard going….I passed a chemist on the way home and it told me it was 31degrees at that time of the morning!  I only managed one more run when I was there just 8miles and again it wasn’t the best.  I was supposed to complete two 18milers when I was there but I honestly just couldn’t have done it in the heat and lack of air!!

So that leads to last week then back in rainy Northern Ireland just home I decided I better get back on track asap.  So hit body attack and did an 8miler as well.  I think I had quickened up to my surprise as the runs on holiday were pretty shocking!  Then the next day I did 14 miles which was a huge amount quicker than I’d ever ran before…granted I did want to pass out at the end but still I was quite chuffed with myself I’m no speedy gonazles by any stretch of the imagination but for me it was good so perhaps all that torture on holidays had paid off!!  This week now as I know I am behind with training its full steam ahead starting to panic now but heh there’s no getting out of it so I’ve got get the trainers on and get back to it!! Andrea Cunningham Week 19 – Where Does The Time Go

Hi everyone I’m back with my 19th journal man time is flying!  Not sure what I’ve got to tell you all this week, I’ve pretty much done exactly the same as last week except I managed to throw in 2 different birthday parties as well somehow.  Exercise wise I did exactly the same except on Saturday I ran a further 14.5miles in the miserable rain and wind and it has to be said it was horrible. I had planned on trying 18 miles but just couldn’t do it in the weather!  I took a pretty hilly route again so I made sure I only stopped at the top of the hills and some of them were torture and my legs were pretty dead after the last two weeks. Also my chest felt a bit sore as if I’d probably been breathing a bit too heavily during my mountain of exercise, so Sunday was a movie and housework day!!

Think I am on track again with training for the Dublin marathon though I probably should do some longer runs if I could find the time…this week I think I am going to do the same training as the last week and then the following week I’m on holiday for a couple of weeks so the trainers are coming with me and I guess I’ll have a whole heap of time then to run and catch up on some much needed sleep!!  Well that’s all I’ve got to tell you this week unfortunately, talk to you all again next week!!  In case there are any kind souls out there I’m running the Dublin marathon for Marie Curie Cancer Care and any spare pennies would be greatly appreciated www.justgiving.com/andreacunningham

Andrea Cunningham Week 18 – Full on week

Hello I’m back with my 18th journal!  Well this week has been pretty full on and I’m starting to feel like I’m turning into a machine and giving up my life lol! Monday I went to body attack except this time I tackled a 6mile run afterwards but my legs did feel like jelly about half way through!  Tuesday I went for a 6 mile run then an hour of body balance and then an hour of body combat. Wednesday I did the same as Monday, and Thursday I did the same as Tuesday, except I did an hour of zumba after combat….to say I was dead on my feet by the time I got home was an understatement!

 

Friday has definitely turned into my day for doing nothing lol I was pretty wrecked after that week so I took it easy.  Saturday then I tackled 13 miles ½ coastal path, ½ road and I took a route which was quite hilly so I did have to stop now and again to walk to catch my breath, but I made sure I made it up the hills beforehand!

 

I feel slightly better about my training this week…not quite sure I could have packed anything else into it so I hope it starts to pay off with the long distances.  This week coming I’m planning on basically doing the same but a longer run on the Saturday to see how I get on.  I also started using my PowerBreathe to warm up and cool down which seems to help…when I remember to do it that is…I’ve got so set in my ways doing it in the morning and evening I keep forgetting about it but hopefully it’ll just come naturally soon!  Well that’s all for now folks talk to you next week

Andrea Cunningham Week 17 – Less than 100 days to go!

Hello I’m back with my 17th journal!

So I’m on the count down now less than 100 days to go eeek what have I got myself into!

Well this week I’ve been pretty active, Monday I went to body attack again – I seemed to have taken a real liking to this class and I find it pretty hard so that’s probably not a bad thing!  Tuesday and Thursday I did the same, went for a 6 mile run then an hour of body balance and then an hour of body combat!  And Wednesday I went for a 4 mile run – it’s year end in work so its been pretty mental I’ve no idea how I managed to fit anything in nevermind all of that looking back!

 

Friday I took to easy and enjoyed some well deserved wine and good food my legs felt like lead so there was no hope of any exercise this day!!  And Saturday I then tackled 14 miles half road and half trail…this was much better than last week maybe I’m finding my motivation again…either that or fear as I run out of time until the marathon lol!

 

Think I am a tad behind with the running for the marathon training so hopefully I’ll be a bit more productive next week so until then folks 🙂

Andrea Cunningham Week 16 – 100 day countdown!

Hola amigos I’m back with my 16th journal!  This week I’ve been on the go just over 100 days now until the Dublin marathon so I’m in urgent need of reaching uber fit asap!!!  Monday I went to a new class in my gym called Body Attack man it was hard I swear my heart was pounding through my chest and I couldn’t breath though that also could be from laughing so much as well!  I really enjoyed this class but boy was I knackered afterwards – I think this class will defiantly help with my breathing and training it was just non stop!

Still using my PowerBreathe every morning and evening and I’m now at level 4 on the resistance so that’s a huge improvement from the beginning!!

Tuesday then I went for a 6 mile run, followed by an hour of combat and an hour of balance!  I think balance is defiantly helping my knee – there is still the odd niggle but nowhere near as bad as it was thank goodness! Wednesday I went for another 6 mile run and Thursday I did the same as Tuesday!  Friday was my day of rest and a very very large glass of vino which I think I deserved though I maybe should have had a small one as on Saturday I tackled 15.5miles!!  Not so sure I should have stopped the long distance running after the marathon as it defiantly is as much mental as physical…it was so warm and I just didn’t have the motivation to push myself so I walked some of it!  Having said that now I’m annoyed at myself so I will try harder this Saturday coming.

About to change my diet again….as I went off pasta totally after the marathon (because of a total overdose on the stuff) but as it turns out I’m not consuming enough carbs now so I’m going to have to face it again so hopefully that will help with my training and stamina!  Well until next week folks…so much for never giving up my life for another marathon I must be mad!!

Andrea Cunningham Week 15 – Action packed week for me!

Hi everyone I’m back with my 15th journal!  Well this week has been quite productive…. Monday I went to combat class as Tuesday and Wednesday everywhere was closed.  Tuesday then I faced the rain and headed out for a 9 mile run which wasn’t too bad so much so I treated myself to a very very large glass of vino with being off work on Wednesday as well!  Unfortunately then Wednesday I was fit for nothing lol!  Thursday I was back to it did 30minutes on the cross trainer on the interval setting at quite high resistance and then half and hour on the bike and then I went to combat and balance so I was pretty wrecked when I got home!

Friday I took it easy and Saturday I faced the rain yet again and hit the pavement.  Managed twelve miles on Saturday but it was brutal it was so windy and wet my legs turned a lovely shade of purple and red!  My knee had a tiny niggle on Sunday so I didn’t do anything on Sunday at all.

My gym has started a new class this week called body attack which is supposed to be a sports-inspired cardio workout for building strength and stamina. It’s supposed to be a high-energy interval training class combining athletic aerobic movements with strength and stabilization exercises so I’m off to try that tonight, sounds pretty hard!!  I’ll let you how I get on next week and hopefully the rain will go away so I can get outside more

Andrea Cunningham Week 14 – Back to the training regime

Hi everyone I’m back with my 14th journal!  Well I’m back into it….at last!!  Monday I took it easy after a rather busy weekend socializing but Tuesday then I went for 6 mile run, followed by an hour of body balance and then followed by an hour of combat…to say I was pretty shattered afterwards would be a understatement!  And as these are the new releases for the classes everything hurts that little bit more the first few times you go.

Wednesday then I went for another 6 mile run but my legs did feel like lead so it wasn’t the best but heh I still got out there.  And Thursday I did the same as Tuesday so Friday then I took it easy and had a very large glass of vino!  Saturday I was planning on a 13 mile run but the weather was just so unpredictable it put me right off, one minute its ok and the next second its torrential rain, yuk anyway so I only managed 6ish miles and then I took a very quick short cut home before the heavens opened!

Still haven’t clocked enough mileage but we have holidays here in Northern Ireland this week so I’ll be off work mid week and I’m defiantly going to get my trainers on and do a long run on Tuesday hopefully so I guess I’m just going to have to put up with getting soaked as I can’t put it off any longer!!!  And getting back to balance has defiantly helped my legs and my knee appears to be holding up so it’s obviously on the mend which is great!  Well talk to you all again next week when hopefully I’ll have been on more adventures outdoors

Andrea Cunningham Week 13 – Socialising spree

Hi everyone I’m back with my 13th journal entry!!  This week has been slightly more hectic with socialising instead of training!!  Was away at a wedding on Monday and Tuesday and it was my birthday on Friday so with various things planned that ruled out any exercise Friday, Saturday and Sunday though I was feeling rather delicate anyway!

On Wednesday and Thursday I did manage to go for small runs just 5 miles and 6 miles though I have to say these were quite torturous and I didn’t enjoy them at all as I was more in the mood that I had to do them to clock some mileage but I’ve always been in the mind frame that the proper training would start after my birthday again as I wanted to enjoy myself so I guess now I’ve no more excuses I’ve 120days to get back into shape for marathon number 2!!

I’m still using my PowerBreathe everyday twice a day and it is definitely helping during my everyday activities but I think probably as I haven’t been putting a lot of effort into my running lately and the air quality has been so shocking I haven’t really seen much improvement here the last couple of weeks!   I’ll know better next week when I’ve been out running a few times and longer distances again so I’ll talk to you all then 🙂
