POWERbreathe Classic

Light Resistance

Choose POWERbreathe Classic Light Resistance:

  • If you exercise / are physcially active for less than 2.5 hours per week and have no breathing problems
  • If you exercise / are physcially active for less than 2.5 hours per week and have breathing problems - from minor to severe
  • If you exercise / are physcially active for more than 2.5 hours per week and have severe breathing problems

POWERbreathe Classic (Light Resistance) uses a variable load calibrated spring, calibrated to a Light Resistance. It can be adjusted from the lowest load setting (10cmH2O) when you begin training and increased as your breathing muscles adapt and become stronger (maximum load setting 90cmH2O).

Light Resistance Load Settings

  • Level 1 = 10cmH2
  • Level 2 = 20cmH2O
  • Level 3 = 30cmH2O
  • Level 4 = 40cmH2O
  • Level 5 = 50cmH2O
  • Level 6 = 60cmH2O
  • Level 7 = 70cmH2O
  • Level 8 = 80cmH2O
  • Level 9 = 90cmH2O

Precise load settings may vary due to: (1) the analogue nature of the calibrated spring tensioner and the precision with which the load is selected; (2) a small effect of inspiratory flow rate upon spring compression such that high inspiratory flow rates lead to greater spring compression, and a small increase in load.

This effect is common to all spring loaded devices, and its size is magnified by increasing spring range (it is larger in a spring with a maximum range of 90cmH2O compared with one with half this range), it is also greater at lower absolute load settings.

POWERbreathe is a scientifically proven Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) device, developed by leading scientists for improving the strength and endurance of the muscles used to breathe in, primarily the diaphragm and intercostals / rib cage muscles.

As with any other muscle, respiratory muscles can be trained so that they are more resistant to fatigue. This resistance to fatigue results in reduced breathlessness and enhanced exericse tolerance.

POWERbreathe Classic uses scientifically proven Pressure Threshold Training. This provides a specific and consistent pressure to train against. When breathing in through POWERbreathe the load calibrated spring provides the resistance.

How to use:

  1. Put the nose-clip on so that it pushes your nostrils together (this is optional but prevents you from breathing in through your nose).
  2. Breathe in quickly and forcefully through your POWERbreathe for 30 breaths twice a day (preferably morning and night so you allow your inspiratory muscles time to recover in between sessions). This is the scientifially proven training regimen.
  3. As your inspiratory muscle strength and stamina improve, adjust and increase the resistance.
  4. Within a few days your inspiratory muscles will feel stronger; within 3-weeks you’ll feel less breathless; and within 4 weeks activities will feel easier.
  5. Full instructions are provided in the accompanying user manual.

  1. Your POWERbreathe will be exposed to saliva during use. We recommend that a few times a week your POWERbreathe should be soaked in warm water for about 10 minutes (see your POWERbreathe Manual for full details).
  2. Once a week your POWERbreathe should be soaked in a mild cleansing solution instead of water, using the POWERbreathe Cleansing Tablets - only 1 tablet is required each time.

POWERbreathe is drug free, suitable for almost anyone and should cause no harmful side effects when used properly. Please read the following precautions and contraindications to ensure that you use your POWERbreathe safely and appropriately.

If you have any doubts about POWERbreathe’s suitability, or you have a medical condition, please consult your doctor.

  • Do not make changes to any prescribed medication or prescribed treatment programme without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not use POWERbreathe if you are suffering from a ruptured eardrum.
  • To prevent the potential transmission of infections, we recommend that you do not share your POWERbreathe with other users, including family members.
  • This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
  • POWERbreathe is designed for exercising your inspiratory muscles only. No other use is intended or implied.
  • Anyone who is under the age of 16 should only use POWERbreathe with supervision from an adult. POWERbreathe contains small parts and is not suitable for children under 7 years.
  • Whilst training with POWERbreathe you should feel resistance when inhaling but it should not be painful. If you should feel pain whilst using POWERbreathe, stop immediately and consult your doctor.
  • Some users may experience slight ear discomfort when training with Medic Plus, especially if they are recovering from a cold. This is caused by inadequate equalisation of pressure between the mouth and ears. If symptoms persist, please consult your doctor.
  • If you are suffering from a cold, sinusitis or respiratory tract infection, we advise that you do not use POWERbreathe until symptoms have disappeared. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
  • Refer to your Healthcare Professional before using POWERbreathe if you have any of the following conditions:
  1. A history of spontaneous pneumothorax (a collapsed lung that was not due to traumatic injury e.g. broken rib), as it may lead to a recurrence of the condition.
  2. Pulmonary hypertension o Large bullae on chest x-ray
  3. Marked osteoporosis with history of rib fractures
  4. Desaturation during or following IMT (<94%)

Inspiratory muscle training, such as training with POWERbreathe, is not recommended for patients with certain conditions, including the following:

  • Asthma patients who have low symptom perception and suffer from frequent, severe exacerbations or with an abnormally low perception of dyspnoea
  • If you are suffering from a ruptured eardrum or any other condition of the ear

On my VERY limited inhale, as I have asthma, I have noticed a difference.

On my VERY limited inhale, as I have asthma, I have noticed a difference. I also use it as an indicator for colds, hay fever etc. When I can’t inhale well I increase my medication. For me far better than Peak Flow, at which I am rubbish. My asthma nurse is happy for me to use Powerbreathe Wellness Edition (now LR - Light Resistance model) to control my medication.
I've been using my POWERbreathe for over 17 years

I've been using my POWERbreathe for over 17 years. Bought it from Birmingham University before it went on the open market.

I'm 79 years-old and it's got me through several marathons, heart surgery and other ageing complaints.

Recent lung capacity tests show I'm above average. I'm sure it's because of my years of use of the POWERbreathe.

Many thanks for developing a tool which has produced real benefits

After a diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis just under a year ago, I have been a user of the POWERbreathe Wellness model for the last three months. I am pleased to report that regular use, together with cycling, seems to be paying dividends in maintaining lung function. The latest lung study showed improvements on all functions, including oxygenation. Having now reached the top calibration on the Wellness version (9), I am now keen to graduate to the Fitness model. Many thanks for developing a tool which has produced real benefits, endorsed by both GP and Consultant.

I have only had POWERbreathe for a few days but can tell I am breathing a little deeper
Review by Susan, member of a COPD Lung Group

I have only had the POWERbreathe for only a few days but I can tell I am breathing a little deeper and I can tell by the power of it that it will help in the long run. I also found out this morning at the Dr.'s office I had some pneumonia starting in my left lung but after they gave me the breathing test I tested a bit higher than I did in October with no pneumonia. So I am hoping this will be very good for me and others.
I recently came upon a gentleman whose life has been totally transformed by using your POWERbreathe
Review by Sharon Pearce, Respiratory Nurse

I am a Specialist Respiratory Nurse working with Asthma/COPD patients in South Essex, and I recently came upon a gentleman whose life has been totally transformed by using your POWERbreathe. He has gone from a severe category COPD (as per NICE guidelines) on permanent oxygen therapy, unable to perform the most basic tasks, to being independent of oxygen, able to carry out normal daily tasks, even digging his garden! Today I repeated his spirometry, and discovered such a huge improvement, I could not fail to be impressed. I am now a firm advocate of your device.

I'd recommend 'POWERbreathe' to anyone to try.
Review by M.V.Moxom, Australia

I stopped smoking over 53 years ago, but people all around me smoked. Seems I've had this condition building up for about 30 years now. Not much one can do once one has it except to try things that might help, and the POWERbreathe is the ony thing I've seen so far that might hold out some hope.
Over the about 5 weeks or so that I have used it, I must say that it has seemed to make a difference. When I used it at first, I had a coughing fit, but - it did result in the removal of quite a bit of phlegm. I found that bending down from the waist while coughing did bring the mucus off my lungs quicker, and it does seem to me that I recover quicker than I used to, and without antibiotics. I'd recommend 'POWERbreathe' to anyone to try.

I purchased POWERbreathe from a pharmacy and really have noticed a difference.
Review by Helen, Australia (asthma sufferer)
Posted 20 September 2012
My asthma has never been in very good control, and I thought POWERbreathe might help, especially on doing some reading about it.

I have been using the POWERbreathe regularly and really have noticed a difference, both in the way I feel and in the decrease in my amount of inhaler use. So I am very happy with the product, and just wanted to thank you for carrying it on your website. I'd never heard of the product before seeing it in your pharmacy, and may never have found it otherwise.

So again, thank you so much! I have always valued you as a pharmacy, for your quality, consistency and professionalism. Now, as this seems to have made a significant improvement in my quality of life, I am doubly grateful.
The cervical area of my neck has released

It occurs to me that my throat is a lot looser, things are easier to swallow, normally I need hot fluids to help my throat feel this way. My eyes seem clearer and the nerves in the neck help the face i.e. it appears to help the face look younger...oxygen reaches the brain and naturally we are more relaxed..suberb device.
Atrial fibrillation
Review by Bigal, Australia
Posted 20 September 2012
I have suffered for many years from bouts of atrial fibrillation which can last from hours to weeks where my heart is beating irregularly and as a consequence I can only breathe shallowly. When I first bought POWERbreathe I used to feel giddy and occasionally came down with a sore throat. Since using it I have noticed much greater breathing capacity whenever I am in atrial fibrillation and also when the doctors ask me to take deep breaths. The funny thing for me is that where I used to struggle when taking a deep breath for the doctor, now the doctor says to breathe out before I have even completed a deep breath. It's like they are impatient for me to complete my inward breath.
I finally have my asthma back under control and can breathe better than before.

I have suffered from asthma since I was a toddler and I used to have horrendous problems breathing in the winter. Even the slightest sniffle would set me off coughing and it would last for months. Many a time my parents sat with me as I turned blue because I could barely breathe and everything they tried was failing. As I got older things got better but then about 5 years ago due to stress and distress my asthma got worse and I was left with a cough for over a year. The cough eventually went but returned about a year and a half later. Everything we tried to shift the cough did not work; I spent nearly everyday in the doctors trying to come up with something. My cough got so bad that it nearly cost me my job and I was exhausted mentally and physically from a stupid cough! It was my Mum who came across the POWERbreathe and suggested I give it a shot. I'm not going to lie, I was sceptical as nothing else had worked, however, when I began using it the relief I felt from the annoying tickle was instant. Within 3 weeks of use my cough had gone and I have been continuing the use of POWERbreathe ever since. I feel a difference in my own breathing now and my lungs feel stronger. This will be my first winter after beginning using the POWERbreathe and I'm not fearing it like I used to. Only time will tell if I can survive this winter without a cough or asthma attack, but I am confident I'll be fine. I sing about this to anyone who will listen and can't tell you what a difference it has made. I think this should be made more available to asthma sufferers as they don't know what they're missing if they don't have one.
