POWERbreathe is a scientifically proven Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) device, developed by leading scientists for improving the strength and endurance of the muscles used to breathe in, primarily the diaphragm and intercostals / rib cage muscles.

As with any other muscle, respiratory muscles can be trained so that they are more resistant to fatigue. This resistance to fatigue results in reduced breathlessness and enhanced exercise tolerance.

  • Third generation POWERbreathe Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) device
  • World’s first electronic variable threshold resistance training device for adaptable, personalised training
  • Simple LCD menu system for navigating through different settings and to view training results
  • Rechargeable - recharging stand included
  • Washable valve head and mouthpiece - DO NOT immerse the handset or expose it to running water
  • Drug-free - no side effects or drug interactions
  • 2010 Consumer Product Design of the Year

Breathing physiology indicates that when your lungs are empty the breathing muscles are at their strongest. However, as they fill up with air they start to lose strength and therefore at high loads they can’t maintain a full contraction throughout an entire breath.

The POWERbreathe K-Series uses Electronic Variable Threshold Resistance Training to overcome this. This type of training offers a tapered loading resistance to match the contraction curve of your own breathing muscles throughout your entire breath. This enables you to complete a full breath and muscular contraction at an optimal resistance.

The K-Series will automatically adapt to increases in your inspiratory muscle strength at the beginning of each training session.

This study concluded that the K-Series device "provides automatically processed and valid estimates of physical units of energy during loaded breathing tasks..."

Your POWERbreathe will be exposed to saliva during use. We recommend that a few times a week you remove the valve head with mouthpiece and soak it in warm water for about 10 minutes (see POWERbreathe Manual for full details), but once a week soak the valve head with mouthpiece in a mild cleansing solution instead of water, using POWERbreathe Cleansing Tablets - only 1 tablet is required each time.

DO NOT immerse the handset or expose it to running water as this will damage the electronics.

POWERbreathe is drug free, suitable for almost anyone and should cause no harmful side effects when used properly. Please read the following precautions and contraindications to ensure that you use your POWERbreathe safely and appropriately.

If you have any doubts about POWERbreathe’s suitability, or you have a medical condition, please consult your doctor.

  • Do not make changes to any prescribed medication or prescribed treatment programme without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not use POWERbreathe if you are suffering from a ruptured eardrum.
  • To prevent the potential transmission of infections, we recommend that you do not share your POWERbreathe with other users, including family members.
  • This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
  • POWERbreathe is designed for exercising your inspiratory muscles only. No other use is intended or implied.
  • Anyone who is under the age of 16 should only use POWERbreathe with supervision from an adult. POWERbreathe contains small parts and is not suitable for children under 7 years.

  • Some users may experience slight ear discomfort when training with Medic Plus, especially if they are recovering from a cold. This is caused by inadequate equalisation of pressure between the mouth and ears. If symptoms persist, please consult your doctor.
  • If you are suffering from a cold, sinusitis or respiratory tract infection, we advise that you do not use POWERbreathe until symptoms have disappeared. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
  • Refer to your Healthcare Professional before using POWERbreathe if you have any of the following conditions:
  1. A history of spontaneous pneumothorax (a collapsed lung that was not due to traumatic injury e.g. broken rib), as it may lead to a recurrence of the condition.
  2. Pulmonary hypertension o Large bullae on chest x-ray
  3. Marked osteoporosis with history of rib fractures
  4. Desaturation during or following IMT (<94%)

Inspiratory muscle training, such as training with POWERbreathe, is not recommended for patients with certain conditions, including the following:

I’ve no doubt the power-breathe has aided my recovery
Review by Joe Richards
Posted 4 February 2015
After suffering with severe breathing problems following an insect bite, Joe sent this feedback below...

I have had several physiotherapy treatments, which always include the POWERbreathe, with Linda Jackson along with a follow up consultation with Dr Colin Gelder and I’m pleased to say my health is improving. I’ve been very lucky in that Linda is a very experienced respiratory physiotherapist and Dr Gelder is this country’s leading consultant in asthma and viral infection lung conditions.

I’ve no doubt the power-breathe has aided my recovery and will certainly play an important role in maintaining a strong level of inspiration in the future.

Hi guys, after being diagnosed with COPD, too much smoking whacky backy in my twenties I suspect (I'm now 43) the k3 I purchased has made a huge difference. I cycle and hike and this has not only made it possible for me to breathe deeper and more effectively it's made my chest feel much more comfortable at rest. At my worst before using the k3 I could not even fully finish a sentence or yawn properly. It also makes you more conscious of how you breathe, almost retraining me to take deep effective breaths when exerting or exercising.

I often recommend this device to people, think its great for anyone with breathlessness or breathing problems or athletes alike. It's a shame that my doctor didn't recommend this device instead of me having to search it out on the Internet.

When I first started I was getting results when training of load around 60, now peaks at 105. Power was under 10 now often at 22. Volume stayed the same at around 4 litres and training index is always at the mid 90s.

Thanks guys at powerbreathe for such a great device I hope that one day the medical profession will recognise it for it's usefulness with medical problems, I'd fully endorse it.

I'm in better shape than when I was a teen
Review by Colin White

I have been using POWERbreathe for many years now (my wife bought me one as a present).

I was born with Chronic Bronchal Asthma and have suffered many asthma attacks throughout my life. Being asthmatic I have always been on medication and it has had an affect on how much sport I can do.

I have always been active and during my teens trained as a Performing Artist I have also had a love for Martial Arts/Self Defence.

I have always been aware of how much I can physically push myself but there has always been a "limit" or something holding me back, my asthma. When my wife bought me a POWERbreathe unit (the classic I do believe) I thought what the hell....I have tried everything else so why not give this contraption a go!!!

Well that was somewhere arround 2003/4 and I have used it daily since, taking just 30 breaths in the morning and 30 in the evening. I noticed that I was using my inhailers less, my attacks were less frequent, my fitness levels increased and I was able to push my limits further than before.

I have just started a trial using the new PBK3 unit and have increased my resistance and amount of breaths to 90 per day (30 morning, 30 afternoon and 30 in the evening). This has alowed me to train daily on my fitness, support my wife in her training (I can now run with her without stopping every 5 mins to catch my breath) and now teach Martial Arts.

My asthma nurse also said that she had noticed an improvement in my breathing, my peakflow reading has gone up and at the age of 32 I'm in better shape than when I was a teen.
