IMT: Research into effects of IMT in oesophageal cancer

Our POWERbreathe friends and distributor in the Netherlands, Trainjelongen, recently brought our attention to this infographic and article that appeared in the Saturday (9th May) edition of their national newspaper, Telegraaf.

It talks about Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) as a preoperative measure to prevent postoperative lung complications when patients with oesophageal cancer undergo surgery, mentioning and illustrating POWERbreathe.

The study, ‘IMT: Research into the effects of inspiratory muscle training in oesophageal cancer’ is being conducted by Karin Valkenet and Edwin van Adrichem at the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen, who were provided with the POWERbreathe K3 last year. You can find out more about this and the protocols in our previous blog, Preoperative IMT to prevent post-op pulmonary complications.

IMT: Research into the effects of inspiratory muscle training in oesophageal cancer

The UMCG (Center for Rehabilitation and Department of Surgery) is a research into the effect of a training program for the respiratory muscles in the weeks prior to an oesophageal surgery. It is a study of the feasibility and effectiveness of two different types of preoperative inspiratory muscle training for patients with oesophageal cancer, who are undergoing a surgical removal.

For whom?
Patients between 18 and 85 years old who undergo oesophageal surgery.

A training program for the inspiratory muscles prior to surgery.

After major operations of the chest cavity, such as an oesophagus surgery, sometimes there arise problems with the lungs, such as pneumonia. Research has shown that, between 8 and 45 percent of the people who will undergo a surgical oesophagus, to deal with these problems. The occurrence of these problems include impact the length of stay in the hospital. The idea is that the occurrence of these lung problems after a surgery with impaired respiratory muscles.

In a recent study in patients who have undergone cardiac surgery, the inspiratory muscles are trained before the operation. It turned out that this is a decrease in lung problems by nearly 50 percent. This program was used by endurance training. Also research has been done on the effects of strength training on the inspiratory muscles. It is measured a positive effect. This training method is not used as training prior to surgery.

What is the program for the patients participating in?
If a patient participating in this study, he / she is assigned to a group of endurance or strength training in a group. Both groups work out three to six weeks the operation is conducted. The courses are run on a device which the patient encounters resistance when inhaling. This resistance is comparable to the breathing through a straw.

To measure the effect of the training takes place a number of measurements, such as filling out a questionnaire, a muscle strength test and a lung function test.
