Sam Lipscombe, POWERbreathe user, prepares to acclimatise for Everest

Sam Lipscombe has arrived in Nepal ready to climb Mount Everest whilst raising money for Cure Rett.

Sam had been using POWERbreathe to help strengthen his breathing muscles for the challenges that breathing at altitude will place on his breathing. You can find out more about Sam, his challenge to climb Mount Everest and his fundraising by reading his previous blogs.

So, here were find out that Sam has trekked to Ama Dablam base camp in the Everest national park where he’s able to see Everest from the South before he travels back to Tibet where he’ll approach the mountain from the North.

Ready for High Altitude – POWERbreathe training by Sam Lipscombe

You’ll remember Sam’s 70-day expedition to climb Mount Everest while raising money for Cure Rett, well he’s been using POWERbreathe in preparation, and this is his third and possibly final blog before he sets off for his two-and-a-half-month challenge! While he’s away he’s going to try and post about his experience on his website so we’ll all be able to track his progess, and then after his return we’re hoping he’ll be able to provide some feedback about how POWERbreathe helped him prepare for the challenge of breathing at altitude.

Beginning to use POWERbreathe, by Sam Lipscombe

In his previous blog, Training for Everest with POWERbreathe, Sam explained how he’s embarking on a 70-day expedition to climb Mount Everest, while raising money for Cure Rett, and as part of his preparation, he began using POWERbreathe.

Now you can read his second instalment which he wrote whilst training in the Lake District. You can find more about Sam’s challenge on his website, and more about his fund raising efforts for Cure Rett.

    Beginning to use POWERbreathe…

It’s been two weeks now since I started to use my POWERbreathe to train my body for climbing Everest. I'm slowly getting used to using the device as part of my normal...

Training for Everest with POWERbreathe, by Sam Lipscombe

In April 2013 Sam will be embarking on a 70-day expedition to climb Mount Everest, the Earth’s highest mountain, from Tibet along the north ridge. It’ll be one of the hardest things Sam has ever done (and he’s done a lot, with challenges aplenty), and he’s doing it to raise money for Cure Rett, a small UK charity that help families of little girls with Rett Syndrome.

You can read about Sam’s previous challenges on his website www.samlipscombe.com where you can also find out how to make a donation towards Sam’s fundraising for Rett Syndrome too.

As part of Sam’s preparation for this challenge, he’s just begun using...

In his blog about endurance racing and sport psychology, Andy continues writing about his experience of using POWERbreathe in his training, in the run-up to Challenge Roth; a triathlon race in and around Roth, Germany.

In his latest blog Andy shares his feeling about how POWERbreathe inspiratory muscle training (IMT) may have helped with his swim training.

Here’s an extract from his blog:

“I would certainly suggest that there has been an improvement in my swimming that coincided with a focused regimen of inspiratory muscle training (IMT). After about 3 weeks of training I began to notice how:

    Sets with fins were noticeably...

Just a quick recap, Andy and Lotte are both endurance runners and are currently training for the Gore-tex Transalpine Run which takes place from the 1st – 8th September.

We provided Lotte with a POWERbreathe (Andy was already using his own) in order to help her improve her breathing strength and stamina in preparation for the demand that altitude will place upon her breathing muscles.

Andy and Lotte are keeping us updated with their training experience in the run-up to this event, and here’s a little background information…

Andy and Lotte spend the majority of their free time with...

Vicky riding in Sedona, US, where she's been based for altitude training

The latest edition of 220 Triathlon (July 2012) included an interesting article from Vicky Holland, GB elite team member, about her experience of altitude training. Here it is…

"Your heart rate is higher, your lungs burn more easily, and your arms and legs fatigue quicker. Sounds fun, hey?"

Altitude training is something that until I joined my current coach a few years ago, I can honestly say I knew nothing about. Three years on and I would by no means call myself an expert, but...

  • Can POWERbreathe improve breathing at high altitude?

    1

    Posted on May 16, 2012
    by Breathing Trainer

At high altitude the air is 'thinner', containing less oxygen than at sea level. The higher we go, the thinner it gets. Climbing or skiing at high altitude places enormous demands upon the breathing muscles. In order to compensate for the thinner air, the lungs must work much harder, and exercise, which at sea level brings on nothing more than a slight increase in breathing, can push your breathing to its limits at high altitude. At 3km (3000m) the amount of oxygen in the air decreases by 30%, and at 5km its half that at sea-level. This means that at around 1km you begin to experience breathlessness during moderate exercise, and at 4km you feel...
