Model Used: POWERbreathe Plus – Medium Resitance

I clean my teeth religiously every morning but just couldn’t get into the habit of using my POWERbreathe straight afterwards for a simple 30 breaths, even though I knew that it would be good for me. I just kept finding excuses not to use it – ‘I’ll use it tomorrow’ or ‘I will start using it next week’. The motivation was just not there. Even seeing how well my husband was getting on with the electronic POWERbreathe K series model was not igniting my enthusiasm. I kept saying to myself ‘I am reasonably fit, work full time and for someone that has passed the half century milestone I still walk as often as I can and don’t have any breathing difficulties, so why do I need to use the POWERbreathe!’ It was just not happening.
I guess keeping the POWERbreathe hidden in my dressing table drawer wasn’t really helping either. Then early one Spring morning I opened the curtains and as soon as I saw the lovely rays of sunshine, I don’t know what got into me but I decided then I was going to start using the POWERbreathe. ‘At last’ said my husband. I also went into overdrive and made a conscious decision to not drink coffee for at least six weeks and stop my intake of cakes and biscuits (well at least try to). Spring detox here I come I thought!
With Lent just around the corner my detox programme was in full swing with the end result being a healthier and fitter me. No fancy clinics, no strict detox programs. Just the POWERbreathe and me.
I use a POWERbreathe Plus medium resistance. I chose it because I liked the colour (girly I know) and the style. My setting that I started on this morning was 4.5. I am determined to be able to turn the dial higher next week but know that to do so I will have to use my POWERbreathe twice daily (30 breaths each time isn’t exactly going to take up any time out of my day. There isn’t any other way of seeing any improvement…).
I feel slightly self conscious with the POWERbreathe in my mouth, walking around the kitchen first thing in the morning and the sound that you make as you breathe quickly in against the resistance and then out again is rather curious to start with, but that quickly disappears as you get into concentrating on the 30 breaths and soon becomes background noise.
When I finish my ‘session’ if I say that I feel ‘energised’, what I am trying to put across is that I feel as though I have had a short mini- workout that makes me feel better even though I am not sure what has actually physically happened to my body. I just want to maximise the effects my own ‘detox’ will have on my body and ultimately hope to feel and see some improvements in my over all well being.
So I made the step and started using the POWERbreathe and don’t know why I didn’t use it sooner.

Well, I successfully completed one week of my POWERbreathe ‘training’; I’ll try and come up with another term for it next week! I haven’t yet got into the habit of using my POWERbreathe twice a day, but have managed once a day, so there is hope of that yet. I use it mostly in the mornings, it kick starts my day. If you could be a fly on the wall you would be able to see me walking around the kitchen, lounge and hallway, with my POWERbreathe stuck in my mouth, fiddling with bits and pieces at the same time, as I am rather impatient, I hate wasting time and if I can do two things at once feel very encouraged.
I have also experimented by using my POWERbreathe a couple of times after work early in the evening, and for some reason I found it far easier to use. I still haven’t turned my dial round a notch but am hopeful that this week with extra determination I might be able to crank it up a gear.
At the end of my ‘session’, not that it feels like hard work, I rinse my mouthpiece and gently wash the main unit as I always seem to collect some saliva. Sounds rather laborious I know, but it really isn’t.
We had Jon Trevor in the office today going through his new ActiBreathe programmes, which sound very exciting. I am going to try the mini workouts that have been put onto a taster DVD at home, as would like to see how I will cope concentrating on my breathing and exercising at the same time. Some of my colleagues have already tried the Abs Core More programme and have been raving about how their abs felt the next morning, so I need to get a move on as before I know it Summer will be here.
Rather enjoying myself and certainly feel as though I am currently using a secret fitness tool that very few people know about (yet), did I say that out aloud. It’s as though we all belong to a special ‘club’, using something so incredibly simple and sharing stories and experiences with each other that are so enriching and satisfying.

Well I've had a great week! I even managed to use my POWERbreathe twice on most days. I’ve been experimenting in the evenings and doing my squats while using POWERbreathe at the same time, and then adding music! You should try it - it doesn't come easy! For instance, do you follow the beat of the music or the rhythm of the squat? Anyway, it's probably a good thing that there wasn't anyone looking through the window. I’m going to try using my POWERbreathe while doing stomach crunches on my abs ball this week so will let you know how I get on with that.

Hurray, I turned my dial round a notch! How satisfying. The secret to training with POWERbreathe is simply to get into a routine. As soon as you get into the habit of using it at the same time every day, just as you would clean your teeth, it becomes second nature and if you don't use your POWERbreathe you start to feel that something is missing from your normal routine. It’s that simple. The problem is that so many of us don't make the effort.
On another note, but related to POWERbreathe , I attended a meeting with a team of respiratory physios at one of our local hospitals this week. Most of us never think about breathing because we just do it without giving it any thought. However, for those people who get breathless or suffer from respiratory illnesses they realise how important it is that we look after our breathing muscles and train them to keep them strong. The science of breathing is fascinating and something I won't be taking for granted now or in the future.

Not a huge amount to report this week. I still haven't started working out on the abs ball using my POWERbreathe at the same time.
However, watching everyone in Jon Trevor's master class workshop at the Fitpro Convention at the weekend made me realise how many extra calories I could burn whilst using my POWERbreathe and exercising at the same time! Amazing to see on the screen the huge number of calories being burnt as participants had been strapped up with HRM's. It looked to me as though if you were looking at burning calories as quickly as possible you could cut your workout in half just by using your POWERbreathe at the same time. Jon, watching your workshop on Saturday was inspiring and gave me plenty of food for thought.

I forgot to mention last week that I turned my dial round several turns to now reach 5.5 (up from 4.5) and will turn it round again this week to 6, as I am already starting to find that at level 5.5 I could do with a little more resistance. It is amazing how you can make such improvements in such a short time period. It’s worth shouting about!

I love my routine in the mornings: open the shutters in the kitchen, put the kettle on the aga and walk around the house getting everything ready with my POWERbreathe in tow; 30 breaths takes no time at all. I’ve now moved my dial up to 6 so am feeling pretty pleased with myself. It’s so simple and I feel great.
